2023-2024 Chair's Message
Board of Trustees

It was a great honour to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees for 2023-24. Over the course of the year, we have a lot to reflect on and
be proud of.
This year, we saw our academic programs grow in exciting ways while making progress on our commitment to equity and inclusion, and continuing to focus on the well-being of our students as they navigate both their educational journey and the challenges of the world around them. I am proud of the Durham District School Board’s (DDSB) ongoing work to make students and staff feel safe, welcomed, respected, and like valued members of schools and workplaces.
Many significant initiatives and events have taken place this year where trustees worked closely with staff in support of our shared commitments to Board policies, meaningful learning, connected communities, and well-being in schools and workplaces. This includes recognizing, celebrating, and applauding the work, achievements, and unique strengths of students at Student Recognition Night, the Durham Black Education Network (DBEN) Student Success Awards, being part of the Student Art Gallery Selection Committee, and celebrating the start of new chapters for staff and students at the retirement reception and graduations.
Trustees have engaged alongside staff and the community, helping to advance priorities by participating in important discussions as members on DDSB’s advisory and statutory committees and being prepared at the Board table to confidently make decisions, including participating in the work of consultation, development, and adoption of the 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan and supporting staff in the development of a balanced budget.
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our school board members, educators, staff, students, families, and community partners who have contributed to another successful year. Your dedication, hard work, and passion for education continue to be the foundation of our District’s strength.
Warm Regards,
Christine Thatcher

2024-2025 Chair's Message
Board of Trustees

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are pleased to receive the Durham District School Board (DDSB) 2024 Director’s Annual Report.
Our purpose—to provide an equitable and inclusive, high-quality education for every student—guides every decision we make. I am excited about what 2025 has in store for the DDSB, as we continue to build our school communities, provide meaningful learning opportunities for all students, and support well-being for students and staff.
In particular, I am looking forward to opening two new schools in September, reviewing the recommendations stemming from our newly
established advisory committees, and to further highlight land-based learning experiences for the district.
As we look ahead, we remain focused on the future—on improving academic achievement, centering Indigenous and human rights, fostering innovation in teaching and learning, and providing the resources our students and educators need to flourish. We are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed and achieve their fullest potential.
With Gratitude,
Tracy Brown

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees serves a critical function in the governance of school boards. The Board of Trustees at the Durham District School Board (DDSB) has 11 trustees who are elected for a four-year term and three student trustees who serve a one-year term. While trustees are elected by area, they work together as a Board of Trustees on matters of policy in the best interests of parents and students from across Durham Region.
Our trustees are important advocates for public education and are committed to student achievement and well-being. They serve as an important link to our diverse communities and often bring forward matters of concern to the Board table to facilitate meaningful discussion and policy making.
2024-2025 Student Trustees
Student Trustees are elected students who represent all students in the Durham District School Board (DDSB). They participate in Board of Trustees meetings and guide the Student Senate. They are also members of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association, where they work with student trustees from across Ontario to advocate for students. They are elected by students to a one-year term, beginning August 1 of each year.
