Great Beginnings: Kindergarten Transitions

This September, 4,446 new kindergarten students embarked on their exciting journey into school for the first time!
To ensure a smooth transition for students with diverse learning strengths and needs, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) is committed to fostering strong collaboration between Inclusive Student Services, Kindergarten educator teams (OCTs/ECEs), and childcare/early years partners. By working together, we create a seamless entry into the school system, minimizing the need for families to repeat their child’s story and providing essential support every step of the way.
The DDSB proudly partners with early intervention providers to support students and families before school begins and throughout the transition period. These partnerships—including programs like Entry to School (Ontario Autism Program), GrandviewKids, Durham Behaviour Management, and the Durham Region Health Department’s Infant & Child Development team—help ensure personalized support, programming, and resources for students and classrooms.
For example, through the Entry to School Program alone, 180 students received tailored support this year, highlighting our commitment to every child’s success. Together, we’re building a foundation for learning, growth, and belonging!
